Situated in the heart of Kilkenny City and sure to be on your Kilkenny Map, Kilkenny Castle is generally number 1 on the Kilkenny attractions list of most tourists and is the fulcrum of Kilkenny Tourism. One of the most instantly recognised buildings in Ireland, Kilkenny Castle has been an important site since Strongbow constructed the first castle, probably a wooden structure, in the 12th century. Rothe House, a historic house in Kilkenny City in the South East of Ireland, is a unique example of an early 17th century merchant’s townhouse in Ireland.
The House and Garden are owned by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society, and managed by Rothe House Trust Limited. Rothe House is open to the public as a Museum, displaying some of the 2,500 artefact’s collected by the Society since its founding in 1947. These artefact’s all relate to life in Kilkenny City and County throughout the ages and some date from pre-historic times.The Garden, newly opened in 2008, is a reconstruction of an early 17th century urban garden. St. Canice’s Cathedral
13th century St Canice’s Cathedral is the second longest cathedral in Ireland. The site on which St. Canice’s Cathedral stands has been a site of Christian worship since the 6th century.
The architectural style of St. Canice’s Cathedral is Early Gothic and it is built of limestone. St. Canice’s Cathedral has been carefully preserved in its original style and form. It is richly endowed with many stained glass windows including the East window which is a replica of the original 13th century window.
St. Canice’s Cathedral contains some of the finest 16th century monuments in Ireland . The memorials stretch right across the social spectrum from the great figures of the house of Ormonde to the humble shoemaker and carpenter.
